Jacobsen To script or not to script, that is what many people wonder when planning what to say when answering a personal ad by voice mail, or when running an ad that requires a voice greeting. If you're an experienced "reader" and can sound perfectly natural working from a text, then go ahead and write out what you'd like to say. But most of us just SOUND like we're reading when we're reading - and that's not the impression you want to give when the person hears your voice for the first time. You want to sound interesting, spontaneous - as close to the real you as you can. Rather than write out what you'd like to say word for word, make an outline of points to cover. Start, of course, by summarizing what's in your ad (if you've placed a persona) or what appealed to you in the ad you're answering. Then giving a further description of yourself and your interests, and what you're looking for. Just make notes of the key points. Your outline might look like this: Physical description Work/hobbies Favorite things What I'm looking for in a relationship Bonus points for long hair & my part of town; minus points for smoker, pets. You get the idea; adapt to your interests and personality in any way that suits you. Then call a friend and ask them to listen to what you have planned and talk through it naturally. Doing this by phone gives it authenticity and allows you a practice run. If your friend has suggestions, fine. Consider them and make any changes that seem comfortable. Then call in and put your greeting on-line or answer the ad with the same conversational approach. Visualize the person who'll be listening to your message and remember that you are talking to them - there's just a little time delay. With a little planning, your voice greeting or ad reply will give the person not only information about you but also a real feel for your personality. *********************** Advice from Aunt Janet -- WHEN YOU'VE RESOLVED TO MEET PEOPLE (or person)...... If you're a typical single person, one of your New Year's Resolutions is to either to get out and meet more people, or to find someone special. Keep in mind that one of the best ways to achieve the second is to do the first. If you pick new places to go and things to do solely on the basis of who might "be there," you are likely to make less productive choices than if you simply go places where singles are doing things you like to do and meeting ALL of the people there. Meet all the other singles who like to dance, like to bowl, like good book discussions, whatever -- and they will be the kind of people who KNOW the kind of people you would like to meet, if you are choosing according to your interests. Please do NOT become one of those pathetic singles who goes to an event to "peek," looks in the door at the 300 singles dancing and mingling, and says to your friend, "Let's go; there's no one here." Ugh. BAAAAD attitude. Meet people, have fun! Be the kind of person someone special would LIKE to meet! ************************* Web Site of the Week-- Access Magazine says if you're a chic young woman -- or just interested in chic young women -- the cyber-site-to-see is www.shesheme.com.
